tilllate.com Interview: Douglas Greed
Douglas Greed started his path under this moniker in 2005 with the desire for a straight bass drum and the attitude of a music lover. Before he was on the hip-hop and drum and bass tip with the pseudonym "Real" (Bionic Crew).
Most recently he is an organizer and recording artist still; despite his many outgrowths. Meanwhile the enthusiastic music lover and indiemusic connoisseur has managed a considerable number of releases on straightforward labels like Combination, Lebensfreude, Kindisch, Infiné, Dekadent, Ostwind, Acker and of course Freude am Tanzen, as well as diverse remixes.
In 2011 he opens his soul and presents with his debut album „KRL“ from the home team Freude am Tanzen, the status quo Douglas Greed. Floating freely from the dance floor dictation he crafts gallant hymns for the „Rave“ under the sheets. As a Bauhaus alumnus he has mutated into a multidiscipline Dougaholic: audio play, graphics, techno, live act, drum & bass, DJ, promoter – Mr. Greed is delightfully passionate about artistic manifestation.
The dance casino is treated properly with sonics, if excessive, and ardent as a live act (solo or with guests such as the singer Dehlia, Daniel Brandt). Indeed, the DJ with the golden hip swing, the black hearted, orange shimmering melodies.
Between Melborne, Moscow and a number of diverse metropolises he entertains the auditorium ever with a sonic insight that is straight-up amazing. There stands an inwardness, lust and curiosity without it being simply functional. To surprise himself and to sweep you along with him is his intention and drive for unforgettably impulsive nights.
Douglas was kind to answer tilllate.com a few questions. Check them out!
tilllate.com: You come from Germany, a place where electronic music “has a crown” and has a true importance for people. Can you tell us a little bit about your career? How did you get involved in making music?
Douglas Greed: I started listening to electronic music via the eastgerman youthradio DT 64. They played the first House and Technotracks and i was sitting in my parents livingroom with my headphones on and taping the tracks that i liked.
Soon i began to buy records. Back then you could call the recordstore HArdwax/Berlin and they played you some records on the phone.
I started collecting interesting music in differentstyles - house - techno- drum and bass- hip hop - ambient.
and after i while i started producing music .
tilllate.com: What did you use to listen when you were younger? Who was your favourite artist or who made you discover the passion for music?
Douglas Greed: I started listening purely electronic music. after a while i discovered hiphop and since some years i´m into „handmade“ music ;-)
I love Radiohead, Tool, The Mars Volta, Animal Colectiv, Son Lux and so on.
When it comes to electronic music i was impressed by AFX, Autechre, UR and all that Detroit and Warp Stuff.
tilllate.com: What are the artists (DJs, producers) that you follow with interest these days?
Douglas Greed: When it comes to DJ Music i´m totally impressed by KINK right now.
tilllate.com: Your album KRL is surely a thing to listen and discover. It’s not a techno album, it’s not really a club album, it’s more of a story you’re telling. If we got that right, and we hope we did, we would like to ask you what was the emotion you wanted to transmit through this album?
Douglas Greed: The album is dedicated to my grandpa Karl (so KRL). So it got a bit emotional. i do believe that a pure techno album would have been boring. for me and the listener.
It was quiet important to me to try some new stuff.
tilllate.com: What kinds of things in life give you that boost of inspiration and determine you to get in the studio and make a track? Are you an emotional person that is creative while being nostalgic or melancholic?
Douglas Greed: oh yeah - when i feel bad i can make the best music. I think you need to be a emotional person to make half decent music. Inspiration often comes after a nice, or even bad weekend.
A friend of mine recommended the french Author Romain Gary to me, and that is my boost right now.
tilllate.com: As your music seems quite a complex process of creation, we are curious to know which piece of equipment from your studio is your absolute favourite.
Douglas Greed: cmd-Z on my Computer keyboard
tilllate.com: You’re also a graphic designer. How would you describe your style as a graphic designer? Are there any similarities between this and your music?
Douglas Greed: i love to layer stuff which is the same basic idea of maknig music. it´s like cooking.
tilllate.com What is your next goal? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Douglas Greed: I´m actually working on a new project with my buddy MOORYC.
We call our self „EATING SNOW“ and will hopefully see the daylight with some releases.
i hope to be still creative in 10 years.
